Employee Training
What kind of training do commissionaires receive?
In today’s fiercely competitive security industry, Commissionaires Ottawa is recognized as a leader —a strong and experienced organization whose thousands of private security professionals are trusted to protect and serve over 500 client sites. Our security professionals are recognized as the most disciplined, most experienced and best-trained in the industry.
The sizeable task of regularly training and evaluating commissionaires throughout their career with Commissionaires Ottawa is entrusted to a team of professional instructors who work out of a special training facility located in Ottawa. Our training instructors will sometimes travel to other communities in our service territory to offer specialized courses.
Initial training for selected applicants
We provide, at no cost to selected applicants, an eight-day Legislated Security Officer Course, (including first aid, CPR and defibrillator training). This training must be successfully completed before candidates are hired as employees. In addition, commissionaires who take recertification courses every four years get a refresher in first aid, CPR and defibrillator training.
Although you will not be paid during this pre-hiring phase, the basic security course is a part of our selection process and will help us (and you) to confirm if Commissionaires Ottawa is a good fit.
Commissionaires Ottawa is a progressive company that hires people of all ages and all walks of life. That’s why we offer daytime, evening and e-learning training options.
Advanced, ongoing training for commissionaires
We are proud to offer career advancement training for recertification, new programs/software and certain highly specialized assignments. For example, more and more of our clients want commissionaires who are fully trained in Advanced Conflict Resolution (commonly known as Use of Force). Other clients want our commissionaires specially trained in sophisticated surveillance, communications and security technologies and systems. In some cases, bilingualism is mandatory and we offer subsidized language training to help meet our clients’ expectations. Important to note is that all our intensive training programs are designed to not only meet, but exceed a number of nationally and internationally recognized quality management, performance, safety and security standards.
Training for supervisors
The quality of our supervisors truly sets us apart from our competition, and we invest considerable resources in selecting and training the best of our commissionaires for this very important role. If you become a supervisor, you will receive either a four-day shift leader course or a ten-day senior supervisor course, as well as the opportunity to attend special workshops and seminars.
Leadership development
This six-module program for supervisors is a highly interactive learning series designed to enhance the leadership qualities of all our Section Supervisors. (N.B. It is not a substitute for the national Senior Supervisor and Shift Leader courses.) The modules are: 1) Workforce of the 21st Century, 2) Principles of Effective Leadership, 3) Managing Performance, 4) Collaborative Leadership Skills, 5) Communication Skills, and 6) Leading in a Unionized Environment.
Ontario Guard Licence renewals and testing
In response to the provincial requirement for all security guards to write the standardized Ontario Security Guard test and in order to support our commissionaires in successfully passing this test, Commissionaires Ottawa has developed an Ontario Guard Licence Top-Up Course that has been approved by the Ontario Government.
