Adoption

Adopting in Canada or internationally?

Although the Criminal Records Act does not allow police agencies to conduct vulnerable sector checks for adoptions, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) recommends that all adoption requests should be accompanied by a certified record check with fingerprints through its Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS).

We can capture your fingerprints and submit your criminal record check application directly to the RCMP. If no criminal record is present, results usually take 72 hours or less.

Thinking of becoming a foster parent?

If you intend to become a foster parent, the screening process is different from adoption. You will need to undergo criminal record checks every few years, a vulnerable sector police check and various other types of background screening.

While Commissionaires does process criminal record checks, only a Police Service is authorized to conduct a vulnerable sector check. Please contact your nearest Children’s Aid Society to learn more.
